MAN CHARGED OVER BOY'S CRASH DEATH

Sam Reeves and Matt Dickinson, Scottish Press Association

Scotland

A man was charged today in connection with a crash which left a seven-year-old boy dead.

Kurt Lynn was hit by a black limousine in Livingston, West Lothian, on Saturday night, yards from his grandmother's home.

He was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, but died of his injuries shortly afterwards.

Irfan Khan, 34, of Livingston, was arrested yesterday in connection with the incident.

He was charged today at Linlithgow Sheriff Court with culpable and reckless conduct and remanded in custody.

He has also been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice, failing to report an accident, and failing to stop and exchange details.

A 23-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the incident, but a Crown Office spokesman said he had been released pending further inquiries.

Kurt was struck on Craigshill East Road at around 6.40pm on Saturday.

His grandmother Amanda Wilson spoke of her grief at losing her ``wonderful little boy''.

Residents have left flowers at the spot.

Detectives revealed yesterday that they had traced the vehicle.

Kurt's headteacher at Letham Primary School in Livingston paid tribute to the schoolboy.

Valerie Brodie said: ``No matter who you speak to at Letham Primary School, everyone remembers Kurt in the same way and uses the same words to describe him.

``He was a happy, lively, enthusiastic, hard-working, bright, honest, polite and confident wee boy who just loved coming to school.

``He always had a smile on his face and he was popular with all who knew him.''

She added: ``Kurt will be sadly missed but very fondly remembered. Our thoughts remain with his family at this time.''

Ms Brodie said class teachers were telling other pupils about Kurt's death.

His grandmother Amanda Wilson spoke of her grief at losing her ``wonderful little boy''.

She told the Daily Record newspaper: ``I can't believe someone could hit my grandson and just drive off, leaving him to die in the middle of the road.

``People are saying it was a limousine that hit Kurt and I know the kids chase after these big cars when they see them.''

She said she was just about to shout for Kurt to come in from playing and eat his dinner when she got news that he was lying on the road.

A steady stream of residents have left flowers at the spot.

Detectives revealed yesterday that they had traced the vehicle.

This latest incident comes after two recent high-profile hit-and-run crashes resulting in the deaths of young children.

Ten-year-old Jack Anderson was knocked down and killed by a speeding car on a pedestrian crossing as he walked home from school in Edinburgh in October last year.

The schoolboy was on his way home from nearby Carrick Knowe Primary School when he was thrown into the air by the vehicle in Saughton Road North.

Isaac Purcell, 26, was jailed for 12 years earlier this month for the hit-and-run killing.

And in May four-year-old Olivia Donachie was killed instantly in a crash yards from her family's home in Redford Drive, Colinton, Edinburgh.

Her 33-year-old mother, Rachel Donachie, had to have her left leg amputated below the knee as a result of the injuries she suffered.

Daniel Jackson, 31, ploughed into the pair in his 4x4 as they walked home from a nursery on May 30.

Married father-of-three Jackson admitted culpable homicide and was jailed for 13 years.
