Well stinky if your renting at the moment you can now get your own,
If you have your own, let the others know they can get there own plate.
i bet the plate barons asses will be tweeking now at the loss of income, and all those extra cabs that will be lying redundant, and going cheap how much 5 bob for a heap like that its only worth half a crown, and thats with a full tank of fuel

When you read stats like this, coming from a trade rep, the trade gets what it's deserves.

The number of cars to residents means sweet f*** all.

Agreed especially for a major tourist destination like york where visitors probably account for a high proportion of the fares

well i can safely say i do not carry many tourist, thats mainly reserved for the Stn rank who bring them in when they get off the trains

latest news is re the Council, 3 plates are to go on, thats from the Taxi Ass. its all been a bluff, the Council got what they wanted, 4 year old motors, in Black with a Council logo

Cab change due

PLANS to increase the number of taxis in York have been approved by city leaders.

Councillors agreed to remove the restriction on the number of hackney cars in the city, despite opposition from drivers.

At a meeting yesterday, Alan Rowley and Stuart Robertson, of York Taxi Association (YTA), pleaded with councillors not to remove the limit, which is currently set at 158.

Mr Robertson said: "YTA is not opposed to change, but change should bring about an improvement. Please do not destroy drivers' livelihoods."

He said York currently had 4.2 drivers per thousand residents, and said there was no need for an increase in the number of hackney plates.

At present, City of York Council is one of around a quarter of local authorities that restricts the number of hackney licences it issues. But the council is concerned that the rationing system has led to a lucrative spin-off trade in taxi plates, with some changing hands for as much as £60,000. The Government says councils that do not allow a free market must justify why restrictions benefit the customer.

At yesterday's meeting of the council's licensing and regulatory committee, several councillors said they would not support full de-restriction, but favoured a slight increase in the number of licences.

Coun Richard Moore said: "Some relaxation would probably be beneficial."

A new report detailing how best to increase the number of licences will be brought to councillors in early January.

The committee also agreed that taxis should have to meet a minimum luggage storage requirement. All vehicles must be able to hold a large and medium sized suitcase, and - but not simultaneously - a folded wheelchair.

Councillors also noted a report on new licensing requirements for previously-exempt vehicles, such as airport transport services or limousines, upon which council officers are currently working.
