I'm glad these guys got a fare increase. _________________ The Herald (Glasgow) December 12, 2007 Wednesday Taxi fares to rise after charge row A LOCAL authority's taxi fares are to increase after a cab owner complained to the traffic commissioner that fares were too low. Thomas Grant, secretary of Paisley and Glasgow Airport Taxi Ltd, argued fares were set too low and did not take account of the increased costs faced by taxi operators, such as rising fuel prices and costs of ensuring disabled access. Renfrewshire Council set the taxi tariff in March this year, nine months later than they were obliged to. The proposed new fares increased the minimum fare by 5p to GBP1.85 and a 1p increase to 21p for every 365 yards. Mr Grant argued the minimum fare was too low and the 1p increase would mean fares ending in pennies and not in multiples of 20p. Joan Aitken, Traffic Commissioner for Scotland, accepted the argument the fares were low and set a new rate of a GBP2 minimum fare and froze the 20p rate thereafter. The new fares will come into effect tomorrow. ______________________ |

I've always wondered about allowing councils to set fares, since they tend to be among the largest users of taxi services. A bit like asking turkeys to vote for christmas? |

A 1p increase on a 20p click represents a 5% increase which is above inflation. |

or 4.8p a mile. 48p ten mile 4.80 100 miles calculate in the dead milage and it doesn't amount to very much. if you do hundred miles it just might buy you a gallon of fuel? Regards JD |
