I agree, but that site of the lady trying to flag down a cab is not one we should be seeing in the year 2007.

watching the video i noticed all the cabs she tries to hail are on the opposite side of the road ,yet when shes busy letting her mouth rip a few pass on her side of the road,also there is one cab in front of the bus and one behind both on her side of the road,the one behind the bus is right in front of her,

Can't believe them Taxi drivers couldn't hear her from the other side of the street in Trafalgar Square. Wonder how many stopped for her? Bet it was loads, but the BBC waved them on. Wouldn't be much of a story, would it?

Are there no cab ranks near to where this lady was hailing? Wouldn't it have been more logical to put her wheelchair into top gear and saunter on down to the nearest cab rank? If she can travel from Yorkshire to London unaided then surely a journey of a few hundred yards wouldn't present a major problem, after all, the general public would surely give her every assistance in reaching her preferred taxi rank.

As others have suggested, I think some of it was selective filming by the BBC, and some of it was another politician talking rubbish. It's true that some drivers drive past wheelchairs (although they are not breaking any laws by not stopping for a street hail) but thats not representative of the majority.

Steve Mac from the LTDA done a good PR job though.

Seeing the vid It looks as if she is just waving to someone. As for hearing her in Trafalgar Sq with windows shut and cab and traffic noise...
As Steve said. Stop for too long in that area= £60 ticket.
I remember once That there was a lady in wheelchair in Victoria st. Empty Cabs went past. I U turned to pick her up. She 'Jumped' into the cab. Luton Airport please driver...
Why do I pick up wheelchair people? Because my wife is disabled and I know how it feels.

if there is a rank nearby then that might explain the cabs not stopping after all you don't expect to get flagged close to a rank

If they wanted to prove a point they should have done it at a rank. I picked up a lady in a motorised wheelchair once at the British Museum, it was absolutely bucketing down, she said she had been refused by six drivers. Should be a six month ban for that. You've got to be a right dog to do that, unless you've got a genuine medical reason yourself.

On reflection if I saw a lady trying to flag me down right next to a television camera, then I would sail on past.

But then again, I do drive a PH.
