Cars towed at new rank

A Crackdown on drivers blocking a controversial new taxi rank has begun.

Three cars were towed away from the rank in York Street ahead of a site visit by members of Swansea Council's licensing committee.

Committee member Richard Lewis said he was shocked to see action being taken against drivers.

He said: "I turned up a little bit early, at about 10.30pm.

"At that time they had police there towing cars away.

"The pick-up trucks were very busy.

"A lot of people would have come out of the cinema, the casino or the pubs and found their cars gone."

Taxi drivers have voiced their concerns over the proposed new rank.

They had threatened to go on strike over Christmas but backed down after councillors promised to revisit the decision in the new year.

Councillor Lewis said he was also disappointed to see the taxi rank move there.

He said: "I don't think that is the right place for a taxi rank.

"The police have enough to do with crowd control.

"It was dead quiet there.

"We should have been there at 2am or 3am when things are really busy."
