Cab driver jailed for lying to police

A minicab driver has been jailed for lying to police after he was caught speeding three times. Father-of-four Kershid Khan was told by a Bradford Crown Court judge others must be deterred from behaving the same way.

Khan, 35, of Upper Mosscar Street, Barkerend, Bradford, feared he would lose his licence, and his livelihood, if he owned up to speeding three times in three weeks, the court was told.

Khan, licensed as a private hire driver by Leeds City Council, denied being at the wheel of his Mondeo when caught on camera on June 11, June 22 and July 29, 2006.

Prosecutor Lesley Dickinson said Khan named Mohammed Aziz, of Manningham, as the driver on all three occasions, but his employer, Arrow Private Hire, confirmed he was working in the areas of Leeds on each occasion.

The prosecution ran out of time to press ahead with speeding charges, and Khan claimed abuse of process. When that failed, he admitted three offences of attempting the pervert the course of justice.

Khan's barrister, Abdul Iqbal, said he behaved foolishly because he knew if he lost his licence he would be unable to support his family in Bradford and Pakistan.

Judge Robert Taylor told Khan: "You frustrated the ability of the prosecution to prosecute you. I must deter others who may be tempted to behave in this way."

He jailed Khan for a total of three months.

he should have thought about the affects his actions would have had on his families before he commited them, i mean if you get caught once fair enough, but this guy has acted really "thick"

I wasn't aware that taxi driving was so lucrative that it enabled anyone to support two families?

Perhaps Leeds is the place to ply ones trade?

What are the chances of this driver immediately getting his license back when he is finally released from her Majesties pleasure?

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would say 4.
