If Flanagan invaded hell I would make at least a favorable reference to the devil in the House of Commons.

Churchill

How the Mayor is elected

Voters in the election for the Mayor of London will have two choices:

One for their first choice candidate

One for their second choice candidate.

Voters do not have to cast a second choice vote but they must vote for their first choice candidate or the whole ballot paper is rejected.

Once the votes have been counted, the Mayor is elected using the "supplementary vote" system.

In this system, if a candidate receives more than half of the first choice votes he or she is elected.

If this does not happen, the two candidates with the most first choice votes go through to a second stage. All the other candidates are eliminated but the second choice votes on their ballot papers are reviewed. If they are for either of the top two candidates these votes are added to their totals.

The candidate with the most first and second choice votes wins. If there is a tie then the Greater London Returning Officer draws lots.

This voting system is used to ensure the candidate with the broadest amount of support from London is elected.

Mandrake column. The Daily Telegraph, Saturday 22nd. March

"Proving hard for ken to get cabs"

"Brave is the man who tries to tell a London cabbie to keep his political views to himself, but Mandrake hears that the apparatchiks at TfL have ordered them to stop issuing reciepts bearing the words "Back Boris"
Our Mr Johnson is undoubtedly the cabbies favourite to replace Ken Livingstone as mayor of London when the election is held on May 1st, and what is more, a gentleman who conveyed me from Victoria to the West End said he and his colleagues are refusing to stop for Ken. " Its against the rules I know (is it?) but when we see him outside City Hall we just put our feet down," he told me. " I had him in the back of my cab once and that was only because I hadn't recognised him. I slammed the partition shut because I couldn't stand listening to him."

I admire Cabman's keyboard politics (not), where he waits for someone else to lead the rising.

But I find any organistions 'advice' to their members to support a certain candidate because he offers them a few 'work relate' sweeteners appalling.

Surely a resident of London has far greater mattersto weigh up in deciding who to vote for other than 'red routes'.

The GMB as a trade union are affiliated to the Labour Party, hence the GMB PDB London will support the Labour candidate at this election. You are correct that there are more issues than the GMB PDB have highlighted, however the issues contained within the GMB PDB leaflet are relevent to the London Private Hire driver.
