Bramley cabbie angry at disability training fee

Angry Bramley cabbie Harry Broxholme has blasted the council after being
forced to fork out for a training course – or face losing his licence.

Mr Broxholme, 63, says taxi drivers across Leeds are furious after being
told to pay £40 for a Disability Discrimination Awareness Training course,
which could also mean losing a day's work.

But Leeds City Council say they are legally required to provide the
training, adding that anyone who fails to turn up without good reason faces
losing their licence.

Mr Broxholme, who has been in the trade for 28 years, said: "We are all
really mad. I will do my bit, but why should I have to pay?"

The Hackney Carriage driver added: "We have been told that committees
have agreed it. But who? I have never been asked about this."
The course runs from 10am to 12 noon, then from 1pm to 3pm.

"I will have to have a day off work for this so I will lose about £120 as a
day driver. I don't know how the night lads will do it because if they have
to be up all day, they won't be able to work a night shift as well."

A Leeds City Council spokesman said: "The Disability Discrimination Act
requires councils to provide awareness training to anyone who provides a
service to disabled users and by their very nature, private hire and taxi
drivers are at the forefront of service provision.

"The training is also vital if we are to improve what we do.

"The course was designed with input from the taxi associations who
represent all drivers in Leeds and is being provided at cost. The original
charge of £80 has also been lowered.

"We regard a cost of £40 to be perfectly reasonable for a full day's
training which will give drivers additional and valuable skills.
"Drivers were given a choice of dates to attend to allow them to fit in the
training around their own work schedules.

"Those who don't show up or decline without good reason may have their
licence revoked, but we believe this is a reasonable and proportional
measure to enforce the legal requirements of the Act.

"We are pleased that the vast majority of licenced drivers and operators
have signed up to the training."

So if we are all legally required to do Dis training, then WTF isn't it happening in all councils, not just one or two?

Why will he have to take a full day off work to attend a two hour course, and why should he not pay to further his knowledge, if he had listened at school he maybe would not be a taxi driver for 28 years.

WTF? The point is he didn't choose to further his knowledge he was forced to by PC nonsense from the L.A. In any case I very much doubt if these courses teach anything that we don't all know anyway.

Some of us are VERY proud of being Taxi drivers

Cardiff was £20 three years ago, the cost is not something that should vary that much.

The course took about 2hrs ish of an evening, this did not affect the day drivers or the night drivers very much as the hours were something like 7 pm to 9pm or 8pm to 10 pm so they did not affect your monies that much.

I think if the L.Os want these things then they have got to be more flexible/considerate.I would also like to see how they arrive at these costs, as they seem to pluck them out of thin air.

Will someone be so kind as to point me to the law that says a council is legally "required" to provide disability training for taxi drivers?

And if they are? Will Transport for London please step forward as they are not exempt.

maybe we could all do it on line in the comfort of our home, pass with flying colours, note from the video that only new built trains have to carry ramps

I have done one of these courses and found it worth while and enlightening.

Our council arranged it, attendance was on a voluntary basis and it was free

But they said it would eventually become compulsory and then there would be a charge.

big harry as he is known in the leeds taxi trade at least he has the guts to speak out and stand up for the trade as opposed too the yes men who attempt to run the taxi trade in leeds which has seen the loss of nhs contract and leeds international airport in last 10 months and now have 537 taxis looking for customers on 40 spaces around leeds city centre, no longer a taxi proprietor in leeds but big harry will always stand up for the trade which has looked after him for 28 years.l
