Cabbie tells of ordeal at hands of attackers

A taxi driver has spoken of his nightmare ordeal at the hands of two thugs
who have been sentenced to four years behind bars.

Amjad Nazir has been driving taxis around Milton Keynes for four years
but now he refuses to drive at night because he fears for his life.

Mr Nazir was attacked on February 8 by two men he picked up from the
Plough pub in Stony Stratford.

Now the men who held a broken glass to his throat before robbing him
have been sent to prison.


Jailed: Lee Cook and Kenneth McKenna

Kenneth Allan McKenna, from Old Stratford, and Lee Edward Cook, from
Middlesex, were jailed for four years at Aylesbury Crown Court on March 14.

Mr Nazir said: "Justice has been served.
I never thought they would get a severe punishment, just a slap on the wrist.
I'm glad the law sees that taxi drivers provide a public service and should
be protected.
You don't know who you're picking up and they could take you anywhere.
All they got away with was £60 - crime doesn't pay."

McKenna, 28, and Cook, 24, had called Skyline to book a taxi from the
pub on a Friday night.

Mr Nazir picked them up at 10.45pm, along with a female friend who he
dropped in Old Stratford.

But as he was directed back towards the pub, Mr Nazir became aware that
something was not right.

"They were a little drunk so I did think they might not pay or do a runner,"
he said.

"Then one of them smashed something in the back.
One grabbed me by the neck and the other held the smashed glass
against my cheek.
They said give us some money or we'll do you.
I was frightened for my life and I couldn't breath."

After handing over his wallet and £60, the father-of-four called the police,
who drove him around Stony Stratford looking for the pair.

Mr Nazir spotted Cook on Queen Elanor Street and the police pounced.

After questioning Cook at the station, officers located McKenna and
arrested him.

DC Wayne Watson said: "It was a very serious crime and Mr Nazir is lucky
that no further harm came to him. He did the right thing by just doing what
they said, keeping calm and calling the police.
This is a really good result that shows the impact that good police work.
Their sentence sends out a clear message to the criminal fraternity.
We will act robustly and get these people put away."
