Racist thug robbed taxi driver and stole cab

A RACIST thug who robbed a taxi driver and stole his cab, has been jailed for more than five years. Gareth Booth, aged 22, of Snowhill Road, Darcy Lever, attacked taxi driver Ahsan Ahmed in the early hours of March 1 this year, after being out drinking with his co-accused in Bolton town centre, Bolton Crown Court heard yesterday.

The pair ordered a cab while in a takeaway in Bank Street at 4am and were picked up by Mr Ahmed at 4.55am. They demanded Mr Ahmed stop in Castle Street, Booth jumped out and grabbed him and dragged him out of the cab.

His co-accused allegedly shouted "I've got a knife, get out of the car or I will stab you". He was repeatedly punched in the head, kicked and had racial abuse shouted at him.

The pair got in the cab and Booth drove off. He was spotted by a traffic officer, who tried to block the cab with his car. Booth rammed the car and smashed into a parked Audi. He tried to run from the scene but the officer used CS gas and arrested him.

He was carrying two money bags and a small amount of cocaine. Booth was also two-and-a-half times over the legal drink drive limit. The court heard a statement from the victim Mr Ahmed, in which he said: "This whole incident has left me worried and upset, nothing like this has happened to me before. I have no idea why they did this to me, I am only trying to make a living."

Booth has a number of previous offences including battery, theft and assaulting a police officer. Peter [edited by admin] defending said that Booth was very sorry and that the incident had happened when he was under the influence of alcohol.

Sentencing Booth to five years and four months in jail, Recorder David Williams said: "It was an attack on a vulnerable member of the public at night time by two men, and I have taken the view that considerable force was used to evict him from his own taxi."

Recorder Williams imposed a sentence for public protection, and told Booth he must serve a minimum of two years and eight months before being considered for parole. He was also banned from driving for three years.

A second offender has yet to be charged in relation to this case.
