Taxi driver could lose licence after row

A CARLISLE cab driver could lose his taxi licence after he threw a microwave at his partner in a Boxing Day row.

Martin John Russell, 30, of Holmacres Drive, Old Harraby, was convicted in March of assault and destroying or damaging the oven.

He was also convicted of assaulting an ex-partner in the street on the same day.

Russell was given a two-year community order by city magistrates.

He must now appear before the city council’s regulatory panel tomorrow to explain his conduct.

Councillors could issue a warning, suspend or revoke his taxi licence or order him to re-sit the taxi driving test.

A report says Russell was refused a taxi licence when he first applied in 2003 because he had been found guilty of “a number of offences involving violence, dishonesty and motoring convictions”.

He was eventually granted a licence in September 2004.

But he received a warning last year after he was convicted of driving without due care and attention.

Perhaps if he worked boxing day, he wouldn't have been near his partner or a microwave
