Driven away by parking problems

TAXI drivers flouting parking regulations have been blamed for taking up spaces on Brighouse town centre streets.

It is claimed they are causing a headache for people wanting to park and shop in the town and many frustrated motorists are giving it up as a bad job.

But a councillor has decided the situation can no longer be tolerated and is organising a meeting to try and sort out the problems.

Coun Colin Stout (Ind Brighouse) said it was time for action to be taken.

"A number of people have been in touch with me complaining that they cannot find parking spaces available on the streets. Instead the spaces are being taken up by taxi drivers who should not be there," said Coun Stout. "There have been problems on Bethel Street, outside Wilkinson's store and in Market Street. People say the town is full of taxis."

There had been an instance where a taxi driver was occupying a space for disabled drivers outside Brighouse Town Hall and he had heard of other instances where parking attendants were not taking action.

"I accept that the drivers are doing their jobs but they should not be blocking parking spaces that are available for people coming into the town," said Coun Stout. "This affecting shoppers and traders."

One disgruntled resident contacted him after struggling to find a parking space. Mr Michael Snee, of Lightcliffe, said he liked to support shops in Brighouse but he was fed up with the parking problems.

"It is often difficult to find somewhere to park because the spaces are taken up by taxis," he said. "They appear to park and then meet up with their mates for a chat while they wait for customers."

He suggested they should park out of the town centre and leave spaces free for people of Brighouse who wanted to shop in the town and support local businesses.

Trader Daryl Corcoran who runs Lenska jewellers in Market Street was also fed up of people abusing free parking by staying all day. He said it was affecting businesses and spaces were often occupied by taxis and other vehicles. He has worked in Market Street for four years and he said he had constantly complained to the council.

"There are vans and taxis also parking on double yellow lines. Access is blocked for pedestrians and it is particularly bad for the elderly and parents with prams," he said.

Coun Stout said he sympathised with people who had experienced problems. Licenses had been issued to 98 taxis and private hire vehicles in Brighouse and too many were parking on the streets and taking up spaces they should not be using.

"They are flouting the regulations and traders and shoppers are fed up with this. We end up with people parking on pavements which we do not want," he said. "It is time for action to be taken."

He is arranging a meeting with council officers, councillors and taxi drivers to try and resolve the issue.

If the cab drivers are doing something wrong then why doesn't the council act?

So instead of bellyaching to the press, the councillor should be bellyaching to his officials. :-s
