Cabbie died after drinking bottle of whisky

A taxi driver died after downing a bottle of whisky to celebrate a successful business meeting.

An inquest into the death of Mr Mohammed Anwar Khan (40), of Albion Street, Brierfield, recorded a verdict of accidental death caused by drinking an excessive amount of alcohol.

The inquest heard how Mr Khan was found dead on a sofa at Marley's Taxis in Colne Road, Burnley, on January 31st.

The previous night Mr Khan had held a business meeting with the owner of another taxi firm about the possibility of going into partnership.

The meeting was a success and around 9-30 p.m. Mr Khan went to an off-licence where he bought a bottle of Bacardi for a colleague and a bottle of whisky for himself. He then returned to the taxi office where he started to drink the whisky.

Colleagues who were with Mr Khan said he drank half of the bottle and started to become aggressive. They tried to take the whisky off him but he refused and continued to drink the rest of the bottle.

He fell asleep on the sofa around 11 p.m. and was heard snoring.

At 5-20 a.m. the next day colleagues went to check on Mr Khan and found him dead.

Pathologist Dr Abdul Al-Dawoud said Mr Khan was diabetic. "Toxicology tests showed a high amount of alcohol in his blood and that can cause a loss of consciousness and suppression of respiration," said Dr Al-Dawoud, who gave alcohol intoxication as the cause of death.

East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor said: "Clearly he'd had a successful meeting and clearly Mr Khan was happy about it. The most appropriate way to mark that was to have a drink. Sadly he did rather more than that and drank more than he himself expected. He was certainly someone who didn't know that drinking that amount would have proved fatal."
