Mayor limits hackney licences

NO extra hackney taxis will be licensed in Middlesbrough, the town's mayor has ruled.

Mayor Ray Mallon took the decision to limit the number of taxis allowed to operate on the roads at an executive meeting in the Town Hall on Friday.

Currently there are 369 licensed hackney carriages in the town. That number will remain constant from June 30 this year until July 1 next year when the situation will be reviewed.

Previously Middlesbrough Council operated an open issue policy whereby no restrictions on numbers were made.

At the hearing Mr Mallon said he was imposing the restrictions to safeguard the livelihoods of current drivers as there is no "significant unmet demand" in the town.

Earlier independent councillor Jackie Elder had spoke of her worry that standards were not always maintained among drivers.

Mr Mallon agreed with Cllr Elder's concerns and said, "in the future, in return for imposing the restrictions he wanted cabbies to deliver higher standards in their public service".

And I thought it was the job of LA officials to ensure standards were maintained.

This is abuse of power and it's blackmail

Teeside is classed as a depressed area, you've only got to travel through it and you'll know what I mean, the place is like something that time forgot.
