A CABBIE attacked a councillor and knocked him out after subjecting him to a tirade of bigoted abuse. Patrick McGlinchey, 24, was left unconscious outside his home and needed stitches to his head after the vicious assault. He also had a black eye and was kept in hospital overnight. Police are now trying to trace the cabbie, who picked up Patrick and two friends in Glasgow. Patrick, who represents Clydebank Central for Labour on West Dunbartonshire Council, said: "After my friends got out and I was alone in the taxi, the driver became abusive. "He was being bigoted, but I really don't want to talk about it. "When I got out of the cab I was hit from behind and knocked cold. "The next thingI remember is waking up in the back of an ambulance." Patrick added: "I was badly shaken. "Hopefully the police will be able to find the person responsible but I don't want to discuss it any further." The driver was heavily built with cropped grey hair and a very pale complexion. He was aged 45-55. The incident happened outside Patrick's home in Duntocher early on June 12. The councillor was elected in May 2007 and sits on the Barlinnie Visiting Committee and is a member of Clydebank Housing Association. A police spokeswoman said: "Inquiries are continuing into an assault on a 24-year-old man in Duntocher." |
