Birmingham Soldier Gets Free Cab Ride from Taxi Driver

23rd July 2008

A kindly cabbie waived the fee for his Birmingham soldier passenger home from war-torn Afghanistan.

Staff Sergeant Richard Meakin, of Erdington, was told to keep his £5 fare this month by a taxi driver who had taken the 36-year-old home from a friend’s house in Great Barr.

Former Stockland Green schoolboy Richard, who returned from Afghanistan after an eight-month tour in October, said: “I got chatting to the driver and he asked me where I worked so I told him I was in the Army and got back from Afghanistan last year.

“When we reached the drop-off point he told me to keep my money and shook my hand instead.

“He said ‘the job you guys do, you don’t get enough recognition’ – I was chuffed to bits to be honest.”

Royal Corps of Signals soldier Richard, whose 18-year career has seen him deployed to Cyprus, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Sierra Leone and Iraq twice, added: “I’m proud of my job, but things like that do make you feel appreciated.”

In London, the Taxi trade has numerous charitable causes for the old soldiers, sick children, and the underpriviliged kids with their carers.

The London PH trade does nowt.

We also lay on trips to Worthing, Disney, Normandie in France and I've yet to meet a Chelsea Pensioner who has to pay to travel in a Licensed London Taxi.

So you do indeed!

Three of our lads went over to Normandie a few months ago with a load of your lads.

We are lucky enough to have support from as far away as Edinburgh and Liverpool.

All arranged through some hard work by the LTUCF and the War outing commitee. The NTA have been very supportive through their monthly mag, last one I did to Worthing, LTI kindly sponsered the fuel and food for the day.

Bravo.

I guess you'll be organising the Brighton one with Mr BB then? Let us know how it goes.
