Daimler's Mercedes to launch full-scale production of electric car by 2010

Mercedes brand plans to launch full-scale production of an electric version of its Smart model by 2010 and is considering offering its A-Class and B-Class models as electrical cars as well, board member Thomas Weber said. Weber told Wirtschafts-Woche in an interview the German car-maker targets customers in large metropolitan areas, which in the future could increasingly ban emission-heavy cars.

Weber did not disclose further details such as unit sales targets of the new electric cars.

Separately, Automobilwoche said Daimler plans to introduce an electric version of its A-Class model by 2010 as well, citing company sources.

The models initially has been developed to be driven by a fuel cell motor. It could now instead accommodate a lithium ion battery without being redesigned.

With the Projected future Closure of so many British electricity power stations over the Next 5 years with no replacements Imminent, where do we get the Electricity to re-Charge these Cars, a matter that will get worse as Electric cars gain Popularity. the reasons cited for closure of gas, oil, coal powered power stations is that they do not meet the EU carbon emmission levels...rather odd considering how much Carbon will be belched out of the Millions of cars that are still running on Petrol/diesel that couldve been electric but are,nt due to the Lack of generated electricity..bit of a Catch 22 on that one.

Generating capacity will be replaced eventually. In the mean time we will be importing electricity from the continent.
