Teen Forces OAP Cabbie From Taxi

A teenager carjacked a taxi driver before crashing into a shop during a police chase.

The youth attacked the cabbie in Brighton, wrestled the 72-year-old from his vehicle and drove off.

But his journey came to an end early this morning when he smashed into a post, sent it flying through the front window of a shop and fled into the sea.

Tonight a 15-year-old was being questioned by police over the incident - while the cab driver has been left so shaken he is going to retire.

Police began searching Brighton for the white Skoda taxi which was soon spotted on CCTV in the bus lane near St Peter's Church, heading towards the Old Steine.

Officers followed the car down St James's Street and the taxi collided with a pole in New Steine, damaging the window of Inka tattoo parlour.

The boy then got out of the car and ran across the beach into the sea in a bid to escape arrest.

Number of issues spring to mind.

Did he have CCTV? If not then would that have been a deterrent?

If the car hadn't been stolen would a prosecution, of the scumbag youth, been easy, as he could have said the drivers started it etc etc?

Would this have happened if the driver hadn't been a 72 year old lad?

Would this have happened in a London type cab?

Should drivers ever stop for a teenager flagging you down in the street?

That is the toughest call of the lot!! Most are genuine and good business. That one wasn't. I worry every time I respond to such a flag; Have I got this one right.......or wrong?

I always say,

'If in doubt, drive past the lout'.

And yes I know that it is against the HC bye-laws.

But under Health & Safety rules as a self-employed person I must continually make risk assessments throughout my working day/night, and so I do in these cases.

And I usually come to the conclusion that there is a possible risk to me.

There is no doubt that CCTV is a deterrent in most cases, but I suspect that in this case the passenger was probably 'out of his tree' on drugs & drink, so would have been oblivious to any CCTV camera & if he had noticed it, that would not have made a blind bit of difference.

Unfortunately, that is now the world we live in.

Sentences of 1-5 years in the armed forces might do the trick though.

I know that there are councils up & down the country (usually small ones) that have occasionally had grant schemes for fitting CCTV in HCs & PHVs.

Anyone throw any light on this one please, especially the funding & where from; local or national government?

There's no Taxi law which dictates you have to respond to a street hail.

In London, PH drivers think there is.

why the hell would our armed forces be expected to take in every yob and chav and hoodie?

we have YOI for that

Discipline, respect etc, etc
