Prom night checks on limos 18th July 2008 Police were out in force at a school prom, carrying out stop checks on limos. For the past three years, traffic police, from around the county, have been carrying out the checks to make sure the stretch limos, often used by youngsters to get to their proms, are roadworthy. Officers were out on Wednesday evening at Orsett Hall as youngsters from Chalvedon School, Pitsea, arrived for their end-of-year do. They checked to see whether drivers were licensed to carry more than eight passengers as well as documents to prove their limos are allowed on the roads. Heather Watts of Essex Police said: “There are also implications with the vehicles themselves. Many of them started out as a normal size and have simply been cut in half and extended. “Some operators do licence their limousines and drivers, but many others do not comply with the law and passengers are put at serious risk as a result. Anyone wishing to hire one is strongly advised to check they are licensed with the local authority.” |
