Here are Jim Button’s Ideas & Views on New Taxi Legislation.

This was probably presented to The Institute of Licensing Taxi Reform Conference on 19th June 2008 at Reading, at which Mr James Button was scheduled to speak at 11.30am under the agenda heading of;

‘Taxis – a reform?’

The download is in Microsoft PowerPoint format, so it might be BEST if you download the file to your computer & then open it from there.

Here is the link;

I think it's very similar, if not the same, to what he presented in January.

Some good points, and some not so good points. :?

I think that is a total crock of $hit.

Could have been written by JD :oops:

What it suggests will be contested by every single trade organisation in existence.

There will be no outcome because there will be no agreement.

A simple suggestion to assist the public in differenciating between HC and PH would be to stop PH companies calling themselves taxis on the basis that they have 1 HC working their circuit .................... maybe the law should state that if you have 1 PH vehicle on your fleet you cannot refer to the company as ******** Taxis.

Adoption of the LPH Act nationally would go some way in sorting the situation out and would be far quicker to impliment.

Single Tier would mean no pre-bookings ................ because no-one wants to pay an operator £100 a week for work.

I think JD has lost the plot .................... sorry JB.

So you think national minimum standards is a 'crock of [edited by admin]'?

You think vehicles and drivers shouldn't be tested regularly?

You think drivers working 80-100 hours is a good thing?

You think it's a bad idea to let taxis rank up in bus stops?

The whole idea of being self-employed is to choose when & how few or many hours you work. If I want to have a lazy week or two & then do a mega-week or two because it suits me to do that then as a self-employed person I should be allowed to do that.

Let's not forget that although you might put in an 80 hour week, the reality is that you will never be driving anything approaching half of that time. The rest will be spent waiting for the next job. So even a tachograph would not be full on most days.

Anyway, I thought that there was no (EU) maximum hours for the self-employed.

I agree, but the problem doesn't necessarily arise in the 80-100 hours week, but when drivers work 20 hours a day at the weekend. :?

No Sussex .................. I believe his suggestions of what National Minimal Standards are, are being disguised to achieve his ultimate goal of a single tier system .............. and thats whats a crock.

Councils have the power to impliment driver and vehicle testing at a level they see fit now .............. no need to reform legislation, just change the advice on best practice.

Sussex wrote:

Of course not ............ but I bet the drivers who are working that kind of hours are not doing so because they want to. Deregulation of numbers in action ............ competition mate ............ only the fit survive ......... this is what it leads to in reality.

Its a great idea and something I asked to be implimented in some areas of Gateshead some time ago ................... the problem is that you do not explain within your argument that JD wants all licensed vehicles to be taxis and not HC as you have intimated within your response.

Be clear Sussex me auld mucker ............ JD's days as an expert who's opinion is worth something are numbered .............. whoops done it again, I mean JB.

So you have no problem with the so-called lower standards of Berwick working Newcastle and Gateshead?

Advice is all that, just advice.

Statute means councils can't cut corners and allow out of town cars to undercut the locals.

Your problem is that just because Mr Button advocates a single-tier system you call everything he suggests a crock of [edited by admin]. You need to open up your eyes a bit more.

I often wonder if you're about to apply to become a licensing officer and have a nice cosy job :lol: :lol:
