Taxi licence suspended

A CARLISLE taxi driver had his cab licence suspended after he was caught driving a passenger down the A1 at 90mph.

Jubel Khondokar, 37, was stopped by police in North Yorkshire on March 17 on route to Manchester Airport.

He was later fined £60 by Harrogate magistrates.

This week his taxi licence was suspended for one month by Carlisle City Council’s regulatory panel.

Councillors heard that Mr Khondokar, of Blackwell Road, Currock, “had been placed under pressure by the passenger who was concerned about missing his flight”.

They were also told that he has held a Hackney carriage licence since January 2007 but had three motoring convictions in the four years before that.

One was for speeding, the others for ignoring a traffic light and parking on a pedestrian crossing.

Mr Khondokar apologised to the panel.

More making it up as they go along.

You are either 'fit and proper' or you are not. [-(

Carlisle to Manchester via the A1?

I'll bet the passenger WAS concerned he would miss his flight!

I think more concern should be given to the guy who was in part b and got his badge back.

Apparently Jubel had agreed to pick the passenger up in Newcastle the next day after dropping him off.

I notice the passenger never complained about this chaps driving. Although I suspect if he had been driving at 160 mph like the considerate policeman who gave the implausible excuse that he was road testing his vehicle then in all probability he might have been a little concerned.

The fact remains that many in the taxi trade are more than happy to see councillors dish out additional punishment to taxi drivers on top of that which has already been administered by the court, yet this is just another example why taxi licensing should be taken out of the hands of councillors.

I might add that it was this council that conspired against taxi drivers to retain an illegal condition which excluded the majority of hackney carriage drivers in Carlisle from using the main taxi rank. I have serious doubts about people such as these who sit in judgement on others, when they themselves are tainted.

Regards

JD

Judging by the speed drivers pass me on the A1, I thought that was the new minimum speed limit.

Well I've never seen a tx go above 50 on the A1 so everything is probably overtaking you ! which is why it looks as if they are all going that fast personally I find the southern end of the A1 far too congested to get above 70mph
