Taxi Driver Fined

12th August 2008

A Private Hire taxi driver who collected passengers from around St Albans without bookings has been prosecuted.

Ghulam Malik, of Harefield Road, Luton, was fined £133 and ordered to pay £342 in costs.

Magistrates told Mr Malik they had given him credit for his early guilty plea and co-operation.

District Councillor Anthony Rowlands said: “Prosecutions by the council, such as this one, should help to deter private hire drivers from trying to operate illegally within St Albans district.”

The prosecution is in response to complaints from the hackney carriage trade that private hire drivers are picking up passengers around the city centre without any bookings.

St Albans District council has said it will continue to monitor the situation and private hire drivers found to be plying for hire will be prosecuted.
