My experience is that UK private hire drivers in the provinces have a far greater street knowledge than hackney carriage drivers. I was talking to a rookie Asian hackney cab driver in Manchester two weeks ago, he was about 22, I asked him about the Manchester knowledge test? He said it was pretty easy. He explained the niceties and then a lady walked up and said, "can you take me to "INDIA HOUSE"? He asked me where India House was? I said I thought you had just passed your knowledge test? Me being a kind soul told him where it was but I thought what a mess we are in.. Regards JD |

Because we have to, or we don't get any repeat custom. |

I think the bloke has a point...bad show by the PH there....and meets with my own experience. I was talking to a rookie serbian war criminal in Carlisle the other day, he was about 22 and he had a bandolier of servered croatian ears around his neck, he had recently got his PH license....He was explaining the niceties when a woman approached and asked to be taken to a place I'm just about to think of....Carlisle Castle.....whats a castle he asked? He asked me where the Castle was? I said I thought you had just passed your knowledge test I fort you would have known.

![]() Of course HC get it wrong on occasions. And the most famous one I know of was from Birmingham Airport when the terminal was still at Elmdon. A Japanese gentleman came to the first on rank & said to the cab driver, "You go Leicester?" And naturally the driver said, "Yes I'll take you to Leicester." So the Japanese gentleman got into the cab, & off they went. The driver planned to get to Leicester & take the rest of the details once he was at the city boundary. After about 10 miles the Japanese passenger started repeating. "You go Leicester?" "You go Leicester?" And every time he repeated, "You go Leicester?" he spoke louder & louder & became more agitated & distressed. By this time it was apparent to the driver that the Japanese passenger spoke very limited English. And every time the Japanese passenger said, "You go Leicester?" the driver would reply, "Yes I'm going to Leicester!" But the driver could not understand why the Japanese gentleman was getting more & more agitated, but though that he must be late for a meeting. As they approached the outskirts of Leicester, the Japanese passenger shouted to the driver, "I go Leicester, lass week, no dis way." On hearing this the driver pulled over & asked the Japanese gentleman, "Where exactly do you want to go in Leicester?" The Japanese passenger was now shouting at the driver, "Go Leicester, go Leicester, go Leicester," & waving a piece of paper in his hand, which he then thrust towards the driver. The driver took the paper from the Japanese gentleman & read the address he was to take the Japanese passenger to. It was an industrial estate in Gloucester. That is why the Japanese gentleman had been shouting "Go Leicester!" "Go Leicester!" but had mispronounced Gloucester. So you see HCs make mistakes too! |

Stevie Wonder is playing his first gig in Tokyo and the place is absolutely packed to the rafters. In a bid to break the ice with his new audience, Stevie asks if anyone has a request. A little old Japanese man jumps out of his seat in the first row and shouts at the top of his lungs, "Play a Jazz chord! Play a jazz chord!" Amazed that this guy knows about the jazz influences in Stevie's varied career, the blind impresario starts to play an E minor scale and then goes into a difficult jazz melody for about ten minutes. When he finishes, the whole place goes wild. The little old man jumps up again and shouts, "No, no, play a Jazz chord, play a Jazz chord!" A bit peeved by this, Stevie, being the professional that he is, dives straight into a jazz improvisation with his band around the B-flat minor chord and really tears the place apart. The crowd goes wild with this impromptu show of his technical expertise. But the little old man jumps up again. "No, no, no! Play a Jazz chord, play a jazz chord. Now truly peeved that this little guy doesn't seem to appreciate his playing ability, Stevie invites him up on the stage and says, "Okay, you start us off." The little old man grabs the mike and starts to sing... "A jazz chord, to say I ruv you .." |

The cornflake packet was unavailable for comment as to the allegations that it was fraudulently supplying false identification. |
