Cumberland Hotel Faces Black Cab Boycott

25th August 2008

The Cumberland Hotel on Great Cumberland Place in central London is facing a boycott from black cabbies following a dispute with the hotels door staff.

The LTDA has order all its members and other black cabbies to stop attending the rank outside of the hotel in protest at door staff demanding payment for cabs working the hotel.

The dispute is set to start 1 September. The Cumberland Hotel is owned by the Guoman Group.

No, it's a feeder rank located in Cumberland Place. As usual with a lot of central London hotels, the best job goes to the highest bidders whether it be a Minicab or Licensed Taxi.

Personally I don't pick up from several hotels where this practise goes on, instead I serve the 'honest' hotels where I know the first job goes in the first Taxi.

However as usual with anything we try to organise, a sizeable minority will continue to pick up from the hotel, and in the same breath whine on about how little the Taxi trade bodies are doing for the trade, but then we all know who these drivers are. [-(

The Hilton in Park Lane and Edgware Road serves me very well Mr TCB. Likewise the old Great Central has had me going all over London and beyond, there's more honest hotels than some will have you believe.

The Landmark was formaly known as the Great Central Hotel as it served Marylebone Station which was the London Terminus of the now defunct Great Central Railway to Sheffield.

Choo choo.

Are we on Mastermind?

I guess being the Midland Railway it would have had a similar name, as the Great Northern does at KX.

In nearly 8 years of pushing a cab in town i have NEVER got 1 flyer out of the Hilton Metropole (Edgware Rd), the only flyers i see coming out their are into the concierge's mini cab chums.

All i ever seemed to get from there are paddington's, locals & more locals.

I now take great delight in giving the concierge the good old 1-finger salute when its busy & he's desbrately trying to hail a cab standing on the corner of Edgware Rd & Praed Str waving his stupid top hat in the air!!!

Well that's the beauty of being a self employed Taxi driver, if you don't want to stop you don't have to.

Why not call him over and ask him where the job is going to. Then ask him why he always gives locals out to Taxi's and see what his response is?

However bare in mind that it also encourages the hotel to phone for a Minicab in the first instance. Personally I've had a few good runs from there, including one to Leighton Buzzard.

Heathrow (especially in the rush hour) is'nt the be all and end all fare drivers seem to make it out to be.

Being outside of the MPD, I could have done it at any price I wanted.

Your point being?
