Piping up for the genuine taxi drivers

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/letters-to-the-editor/south-wales-echo-letters/2008/08/26/piping-up-for-the-genuine-taxi-drivers-91466-21603886/

AS a private hire taxi licence holder of 18 years, it annoyed me to read all the negative comments from young people regarding “rip-off” hackney carriages in Cardiff.

I agree that taxis can be expensive but when used by two or more people they can be cheaper than other forms of travel and save time.

I am also fed up of being tarred with the same brush as some of these “kings on Saturday night/b****er-all Sunday morning” town drivers that unfortunately do operate in our city.

If people wish to travel in a reasonable and safe environment why not pre-book a car from a company like Dragon taxis (other firms are available) where your call is logged on to a computerised system along with your driver, and the car is monitored via a tracking system for your safety. All fares are meter-charged as approved by Cardiff council and not randomly picked out of thin air.

If there any problems it is all kept on record and can be dealt with appropriately.

If you need any recommendations why not try asking our many older customers who’ve been using our services for years?

Thank you and I hope you print this to put genuine cab drivers’ views across!

What the guy has neglected to say "surprise, surprise" is that the private hire boys are running on a higher meter tariff than the hackneys.

We had a situation whereby one proposal of an increase was way too low and rejected, but another was put forward around about ish 17% and the private hire companies implemented it straight away - the increase has still not been ratified and as such the Hackney boys are still running on 2006 prices.

So who is telling porky pies, he also omitted to mention that P.hire charge a fare and a half for people carriers - but Hackneys can only charge an extra £1 per person.
