Bid to lower age of Pendle's taxi fleet




THE average age of taxis in Pendle could be lowered in a bid to improve road safety.

Earlier this month a report revealed that over half of the taxis in the borough are not roadworthy when they are first tested.

It indicated that hackney carriage and private hire vehicles were failing the compulsory test due to problems with lights, brakes, steering and suspension, meaning many of them are unsafe and at risk of causing accidents.

And the majority of the ‘unfit’ taxis were also revealed to be seven years-old or over.

Consequently, it has been decided that all taxis will be required to display license expiry dates on their plates.

Chairman of the taxi licensing sub-committee Pauline McCormick, hopes that by lowering the average age of taxis, a higher number of them will pass the test first time.

She added that further solutions will be discussed at the next meeting when more taxi drivers are available to attend.

She said: “We want as many taxi drivers there as possible because we want to hear their thoughts and work together with them to provide a better service.”

Pretty bad considering this authority practices "quantity controls" and no knowledge test. Perhaps saloon vehicles are becoming over priced in Pendle?

It would be better to have a policy where they will not licence any vehicle over 3 years at first registration, and set a time limit of how long the vehicles can stay on,
