Cabbie's Cash Stolen As He Helps Accident Victims
30th August 2008
Two yobs stole money from a taxi driver after he had pulled over to help an elderly couple involved in a car crash.
Nick Bailey, 42, had rushed to the aid of David and Barbara Peat when he saw their smashed Ford Fiesta in York Road, Southend, after it had earlier crashed in Queensway.
The Radio Cars worker left his taxi in the road and two yobs reached into the car and stole the cash machine.
He said: “The car was parked close, only a couple of feet away, but I had left the window down.
“I had pulled over to see if they were OK. They looked shocked, but not injured. I looked at the car and was surprised anyone had survived.
“It was really annoying to see I had been robbed. I was just lucky they didn’t steal the sat nav or my wallet.”
After the two men snatched the cash box, containing about £30, Mr Bailey, from Shoebury, gave chase in his car, but the pair of thieves escaped.
The Peats, of Colchester Close, Southend, crashed when a rear tyre burst and the car lurched from side to side, striking the central reservation.
During the crash the couple’s Yorkshire Terrier, Barney, was thrown through an open window, but survived and was found days later.
Mrs Peat, 67, said: “The car starting zig-zagging between the central barrier and the wall. My husband had to grab the steering wheel."
“When the car stopped we saw Barney running up the underpass so he must have been thrown through the window."
“We were screaming out to him. Friends and family were out looking for him. It was very traumatic."
“Then we had a call from the dog warden in Thundersley who said he was 99 per cent certain he had our dog. He brought him round and there were tears."
“The taxi driver pulled up and asked us if we were OK."
“He was very nice and waited with my husband. So many people were willing to help, except for these two young lads."
“We just want to thank everyone who helped.”
The impact of the crash was so severe the Fiesta became wedged under the crash barrier and fire crews used heavy lifting equipment to free the vehicle.
Crews then drove the car to nearby York Road, where the thieves struck.
