Fixing Of Cab Fares Is Ended

2nd September 2008

Cab drivers have agreed to stop fixing their fees under pressure from the Island’s competition regulator.

The Island’s four cab companies – Citicabs, Domino Cabs, Luxicabs and Yellow Cabs – were under investigation for price-fixing by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority.

And it has been revealed that Driver and Vehicle Standards, a department of Transport and Technical Services, colluded in the price-fixing by printing and distributing a ‘scale of fees’ agreed by the four cab companies – a fact described by the head of the JCRA as ‘worrying’.

JCRA executive director Chuck Webb said that he hoped the end result would be cheaper cab fares for Islanders. The deal affects only private cabs which run through phone operators – the prices for taxis that use ranks are set every year by the Transport Minister.

One solution, get them fitted with meters and let the transport minister set the fares

I thought the whole ideas was to be competitive but not underprice yourself..its quite normal to find out what the oppositions charging and then charge similar...you dont need to be covert and all huddle in a darkened room to work out what each other charges...just ask a punter what he last paid.

The costs of operating and running are the same....so why are people so surprised the fares are the same?
