A GLOUCESTER taxi driver died in a crash on the A48 yesterday At 5am, the 47-year-old man's white Rover 75 saloon car left the road and collided with Lyes abattoir at Minsterworth. The taxi was travelling towards Gloucester from the Forest of Dean when the accident happened. The man was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. The A48 was closed from Elton corner to Highnam while police carried out investigations and re-opened at 11.45am. inEe crumpled car wreck was removed from the scene at 11am. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and the identity of the man has not been released. Landlord of the nearby Severn Bore pub, Derek Smallman said the first he knew about the crash was when he woke up. He said: "I looked outside and saw police everywhere and found out that the road had been closed. "It's really awful, we get accidents on this bend all the time." Police said there were no indications the crash was weather related. The victim's family have been informed as has the coroner. The tragedy comes just hours after another smash 100 metres west of the spot at 7pm. A 20-year-old male driver had to be freed from his car and was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital, in Bristol. The victim suffered head and internal injuries. Last night his condition was described as stable. The car was heading towards the Forest of Dean when it was in a collision with a telegraph pole and a mobile home on the brow of Hartlands Hill near the Severn Bore pub. Mr Smallman was behind the bar at his pub at the time. He said: "There was an almighty bang and everyone rushed out to the beer garden. There was smoke and dust everywhere." The man's 46-year-old mother was a passenger in the car and was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Both are from the Lydney area. |
