Carlisle taxi drivers ask council to increase fares

Taxi fares in Carlisle could rise by up to 7.8 per cent.

Costs up: Taxi representatives want to keep fare increases low to keep customers

City councillors meeting today will consider proposals to raise fares, which last went up in November 2007.

Increasing them in line with transport costs, which have jumped by 7.8 per cent, would take the cost of a one-mile journey from £2.70 to £3.

A two-mile trip would also rise by 30p to £5.

The trade associations, which represent around half of Carlisle’s taxi drivers, want a lower increase averaging 4.3 per cent.

Under their plan, a one-mile journey would cost £2.90 and a two-mile journey £4.90.

A report to councillors says: “A meeting has taken place with officers of both taxi trade associations to hear their views.

“Although some of their members were struggling, they felt that a full inflationary increase might push members of the public towards other forms of transport.”

The council’s regulatory panel is not expected to increase other charges, such as waiting time.

But it may bring in a surcharge of 50p per adult when more than four passengers are carried in one taxi.

Taxi fares in Carlisle are roughly in line with those elsewhere in Cumbria.

The current £4.70 charged for a two-mile trip compares with £4.30 in Copeland, £4.60 in Barrow, £4.70 in South Lakeland, £4.94 in Eden and £5.20 in Allerdale. Any increases approved by the regulatory panel will apply from October.

Its a rip off, alot of elderly people depend on the taxi services and to increase to such levels is terrible, I understand the cost of petrol increased but its not fair and to add a surcharge for additional passengers isn't fair either, if the driver carries three people to five whats the difference, I hope people move to buses instead as some taxi drivers think they own the road and speed when they don't have any passengers and take their time when they do so they bump up the price for the paying passenger.

taxi fares in Carlisle are the most expensive I ever seen in the UK. I have paid £30 from stanwix to west of the city and £15 from city centre to west of the city. Yet Newcastle to Sunderland at 3am is £17 at most and Dumfries to Carlisle after a night out was £35. Maybe more regular buses throughout the city after 7pm would reduce the reliance on taxis.

That's a David Dickinson fare tariff.

'Cheap as Chips'

But the question that really matters is what will your Waiting Charges be on the new tariff?

It would be nice if, just once, the press got their quotes from people who actually use our services on a regular basis, instead of some old buffer who hasn't been in a cab since the silver jubilee. :shock:

Depends what your on....we run on £2 per mile after the first mile... day rate....+ 33% from 11pm..most of us are happy at that.

This guy obviously doesn't get out much.

It's just recently gone up down here to £4 first mile and £1.30 for each after.

Before our increase we were on £3.60 and £1.20

Well our average fare is quite short, hence the higher first mile, many of our day jobs barely make it to £4

God fights back..

You people are mad....its a 20p increase on basically all fares...thats 50 jobs for an extra £10....the surcharge for additional passengers is dependent on a driver spending £30 Grand on a larger vehicle......and you mean we dont own the road?

Martin, driving slowly does not increase the taxi fare. The meter ticks over per so much distance. The only point it factors in time is when the taxi is at a stop.

Big, no huge, no massive mistake not putting your waiting charges up.

That is where you get you bunce.

Tell me this.

A tax man works out your earnings by the miles you travel per year & he gets the mileage from your council for each proprietor from the mileage reading at the annual vehicle test.

Tell me how the tax man can make any assumption as to how much waiting time you have earned on your meter per annum???

Apart from that, I truly believe that waiting charges are at least as important as distance charges.
