Cab Drivers Go To Union For Strength

17th September 2008

Taxi drivers fighting to get their voice heard by the council have used union backing to help them fight their corner.

Members of the Bracknell Licensed Taxi Forum (BLTF) want the council to put a limit on the number of Hackney Carriages licensed in the borough to help drivers provide a better service to the public and make a better living.

Since joining the professional drivers branch of the GMB union, members of BLTF have asked Bracknell Forest Council look into their concerns.

Robert Sexton, head of trading standards and licensing for the council, said: “Officers met with representatives of the BLTF in September to listen to and discuss their views on the limiting of taxi licence plates.”

He added the matter will be discussed at a licensing and safety committee meeting on Thursday, October 2.

Andy Watson, spokesman for the BLTF, said: “Union backing has given us clout. If it wasn’t for the union backing I don’t know if the council would be looking into this for us.”

The BLTF says if the council does not put a limit on the number of Hackney Carriages, drivers will be forced to charge more for fares because there is not enough business to earn an adequate living.

Andy added: “We’re not trying to line our pockets.

“We’re trying to protect the standard of the trade for the paying public.”
