Cabbies join campaign

From Macclesfield Express

TAXI drivers are on board the Express campaign to stop pumping up petrol prices because Macclesfield’s forecourts are "hitting them hard".

Along with commuters, cabbies are calling on Silk Town garages to drop the cost of fuel to keep it in line with neighbouring areas.

Drivers claim the recent hike in the price – due to the spiralling cost of oil – was bad enough, without having to splash extra cash just by being in Macclesfield.

"I would definitely call for it to be cheaper and join the Express’ campaign," said Graham Grevena, 45, boss of GT Tours on Short Street.

"The last taxi fare increase in Macclesfield was when diesel was about £1, then it jumped to £1.30 because of oil prices – and we were already paying a higher price here. It’s hard for us.

"The least they can do is to be as competitive as places like Wilmslow."

John Hanmer, 42, owner of Silvertown taxis on Wood Street for eight years, has 42 cars on his books.

He said: "We normally fill up in Macc but we would try to do it out of town if we have airport jobs. It’s always been the same around here but why is it dearer? I’ll join the campaign."

Jeanette Davenport, manager of Cab Co on Charlotte Street, Macclesfield, added: "Sometimes you just can’t avoid filling up here. It costs the business and it harms us as well, it’s not fair really."

Andy Wilson, boss of Airport Cars and Buses in Prestbury, said: "It should definitely come down in Macclesfield."

Neil White, 40, of Bollington Radio Cars, said: "I usually fill up in Macc. I heard that a barrel of oil went down to $77, which is its lowest in ages, so a litre of petrol should be well under a pound."
