Wellingborough cab driver needed brain scan after vicious attack
A taxi driver was beaten up so badly he needed an emergency brain scan. Samuel Obeng, 49, suffered serious head injuries and is still unable to speak or open his eyes after the savage attack. Doctors at Kettering General Hospital considered sending him to the specialist head injuries unit at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Mr Obeng's boss at Wellingborough taxi firm Twenty 4 Seven, Tony Binns, said: "He was beaten up beyond recognition. His face was so badly swollen and he still can't open his eyes." The attack is the latest in a series on cabbies.
There have been six in the last five months with drivers being threatened with knives, one left with his arm and cheekbone broken and another left at the roadside as his car was driven away.
Mr Obeng, who lives with his family in Shelley Road, Wellingborough, is believed to have been attacked in Owen Close, in the town, at about 4am on Wednesday.
Mr Binns, said: "A girl came to the office to book a taxi at about 3am. "She got into Samuel's car and they drove off. Later on he came back – he somehow managed to drive back to the office." It is not known how many people carried out the attack but the victim's money, a wallet, mobile phone and a bag were taken from the taxi.
Mr Binns said: "We have been phoning the hospital for regular updates. He is still not able to speak yet. He is on the mend but he's still not out of the woods. "Everyone is shocked. Samuel is just a nice, generally mild-mannered guy who wouldn't hurt a fly."
A police spokesman said: "The victim was in such a bad way he was not sure where this might have happened, but we think it may have happened in the area of Owen Close, Wellingborough. He had been assaulted and robbed."
Mr Binns said his firm had brought in new security measures since the attack, with night drivers only picking up known customers.
Wellingborough Hackney Carriage Association chairman Barry Liffen said: "On behalf of all the town's drivers I would like to wish Samuel a speedy recovery from this horrific attack.
