Taxi drivers convicted over speeding offences

A GROUP of Reading taxi drivers were found guilty of perverting the course of justice on Monday.

Mohammed Naseem Bashir, 37, from Field Road, and Sarah Murrell, 27, from Salisbury Road, were found to have charged three other taxi drivers money to fill out motoring notices with false details.

Mohammed Naseer Bashir, 34, from Field Road, Jawaid Iqbal, 42, of Palmerstone Road, Earley and Raja Tariq Khan, 37, of Woodstock Road, Reading, were also sentenced at Oxford Crown Court. after pleading guilty to the service provided by Bashir and Murrell.

The group have clocked up more than 150 motoring offences with Reading Council’s licensing departments, including giving false driver nominations or vehicle registration to avoid speeding offences.

PC Carl Lewis, from Thames Valley Police’s Fixed Penalty Support Unit, said: “This was a very complicated, long-term investigation. It was vital to get the conviction of these offenders as their actions permitted professional drivers, who transport the public for a living, to drive without fear of prosecution for bad driving practices, such as jumping red lights and driving at excessive speeds.”

Wonder if custodial sentences will be sought?

Their guilty pleas may have saved them, but a suspended jail sentence and un-paid work might be what happens.

Private hire driver jailed for offences

19/11/2008

Two private hire drivers who for six years provided false information to police to avoid other drivers being prosecuted for speeding and jumping the lights have been sentenced.

Mohammed Naseem Bashir, 37, of Field Road, in the town centre, and Sarah Murrell, 27, from Salisbury Road, West Reading, took part in the scam dating from 2002.

The investigation centred on false driver nominations following excess speed and red traffic light offences detected by safety cameras.

Police worked closely with the council’s licensing departments and identified more than 150 offences where false driver nominations had been made or where vehicles had been falsely registered with the DVLA to avoid speeding offences.

The pair, along with three other private hire drivers who took advantage of the scam, were sentenced at Oxford Crown Court on Monday after they all admitted the offences.

Bashir was sentenced to 16 months custody and was disqualified from driving for 12 months. Murrell was given a 35-week suspended sentence and ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. She was also issued with a three-month curfew.

Mohammed Naseer Bashir, 34, also from Field Road, Jawaid Iqbal, 42, of Palmerstone Road, Earley, and Raja Tariq Khan, 37, of Woodstock Street, in the town centre, were sentenced to suspended custodial sentences, unpaid community work and disqualified from driving.

Investigating officer PC Carl Lewis said: “This was a very complicated, long-term investigation.

“It was vital to get the conviction of these offenders as their actions permitted professional drivers, who transport the public, to drive without fear of prosecution for bad driving practices, such as jumping red lights and driving at excessive speeds.

Reading Borough Council spokesman Chris Branagan added: “We are very pleased that the police prosecutions have resulted in a successful conclusion to a lengthy and complex enquiry.

"We are pleased to have provided substantial evidence that helped secure the convictions.”
