Council support to taxi drivers during recession

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is putting measures in place to help taxi drivers get through
the current economic downturn.

A recent survey on taxi demand, carried out on behalf of the Council, has found that there is no significant unmet need for taxis (hackney carriages), and therefore the Council will be considering not to increase the number of licences for hackney carriages at present.

The survey comes at a significant time when business has been slower than normal for the local Hackney Carriage service due the recession.

In order to support the local taxi community, the Council’s Cabinet will be asked next week
(22nd September) to consider a report which includes an option to freeze further taxi licences being issued from 1st April 2010 for a three-year period.

Councillor Ian Robertson, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Waste, says: “The Council recognises that taxis are a really important element of public transport in Southend and has been working closely with the Taxi Drivers Association to look at the type of support that can be provide during this difficult economic period.

“Following the survey on the current taxi provision in Southend, it is clear that there is no additional demand at this time and so one option that is being considered, in the interest of our taxi community, is to put a freeze on any extra licences being granted.”

Some common sence at last.

The leader of Southend council at a press conference yesterday announced the immediate stopping of issuing Hack plates for 3 years and no resumption until an unmet demand survey deemed it necessary.This comes just 4 months after GMB PDB involvement, the promise of 20000 drunks let loose on a Saturday night somewhat concentrated their attention.

Terence Flanagan of the GMB said
" this council once we were involved very quickly changed their tune, along with excellent support from the Southend LTDA and by harrassing the politicians this was achieved.

Next a multitude of issues, Ranks. Testing Criteria etc. all of which will be addressed in the same manner this was a help but there is much more to be done the membership in the town will ensure it is!!"

I'm afraid not, Southend has been using a managed growth policy for the past few years, the trade appear to be asking for that to stop.

The options for the council, stated in the report are;

1, Continue managed growth

2, Delimit

3, Cease the issue of licenses until the next survey

I'm not thinking anything, merely pointing out the GMB press release isnt telling the truth.

Incidentally, they've been members four months and the demand survey was ordered by the council 9 months ago.

I'm sure we will, but the press release from the GMB is claiming the council have already made the decision, so lets not worry about it.

I dont think the four months would have made any difference, the council have a fairly consistent policy of managed growth already in place.
