I have written a database of all those councils who still restrict numbers and I would like assistance from anyone who has an accurate knowledge of the plate values in the 125 Authorities that are listed in the restricted numbers thread. The database will be for public use and will be freely available to anyone who wants it. Accuracy is important so please, "no guessing". The database will calculate amongst other things the total plate value in a certain area, or group of areas and the total value throughout the country. If anyone has any suggestions of what to add to the database I would be willing to listen to sugestions. I have put in the plate values of those areas of which I am familiar with and I am guessing at Brighton as being around the 45 - 55 grand mark, can anyone confirm the accurate value for Brighton please? Yes very interesting. I thought it was more 40 grand but I spoke to two different owners and they both confirmed 25 grand. Naturally the ones which seem to be a little under or over calued will be double checked before the final data is completed. I put Stockport in as being 40 grand because thats what they were before the OFT report came out but I shall have to double check Stockport for my own satisfaction. Liverpool I thought was a little high but I took that figure from the Halton report. I would have thought more 40 than 50 so that needs double checking. I suspect there will be a few that will need checking but at the end of the day I hope to publish all the correct figures. Best wishes JD |

John I think it would also be useful to include areas that have derestricted numbers for WAVs but maintain a restriction on the number of saloons. I say this because the DDA will not be implimented in 2010 - 2020. In Gateshead we have 87 saloon HC licenses with 2 retained as they were revoked, the value of these plates is currently £10,000 but rising. It is also worthy of note that their value was steady at £6,000 before derestriction. WAVs now total 201 so the total number of HC on the 4 ranks of Gateshead is currently 286 but this figure is falling as people are going out of business, 12 this year to be exact. The last I heard a WAV plate in Newcastle would cost you £15,000 and a saloon plate around £27,000 but that could well have changed since the Liberals got elected and are looking to reduce inner city polution. It's an area fraught with difficulty John - I think many of the figures that we hear could include the vehicle as well. You will no doubt be taking that factor into account, but this could well explain the Liverpool figure, for example, which looks on the high side. Watch also for zoned boroughs, where, according to OFT, plate values are particularly high, but any figures for plate numbers may include both quotaed plates and worthless unrestricted plates. |

But some of those may be de-restricted now 
The OFT mentioned £65,000 for Calderdale, but how many taxis this relates to I'm not sure, but perhaps Yorkie could tell us. |

B. Lucky You raised some valid points. There is a case for including saloon type vehicles in partially restricted authorities but I would have to do it in a seperate list. The list in question is just for those 123 Authorities that still fully restrict numbers. I supsect Authorities like your own could be classed as being partially restricted. I am in discussion with a Government official now who thinks that partial deregulation is not really deregulation at all. I can see the reasoning behind that but if anyone can obtain a license on presentation of the right type of vehicle then you would probably have to concede that it is unrestricted. Every restricted Authority that has recently changed its policy to that of de restriction has brought in a quality control element. That quality control element as we all know, is WAV only and no saloon type vehicles. The trend is unlikely to change. Therefor, those owners who drive saloon type vehicles will probably find that their plates at present have a financial premium, whereas the WAV plate may not. For my own satisfaction and that of my list I need to know if Adur needs to be re added. Adur informed me that they have a policy of not restricting WAV type vehicles but they do restrict saloon type vehicles. I suspect that is a similar policy to many other councils throughout the country, including Gateshead. I have a dilemma because my Government official seems to think that Adur doesn't fit into the category of de restriction. If Adur doesn't fit, then neither will many of the other licensing Authorities who are currently pursuing a change of policy. Best wishes JD |
