Controversial County Durham cab changes approved

CABBIES have vowed to pursue legal action after controversial new trade rules were nodded through without a single word of protest. Widespread changes to County Durham's taxi trade were rubber-stamped at County Hall yesterday - with the proposals winning all-party support.

Councillors approved creating a deregulated, countywide hackney carriage zone, allowing unlimited numbers of vehicles to operate and imposing an all-white colour scheme. Afterwards, fuming cabbies claimed the changes would put taxi firms out of business and "destroy" historic Durham City, leaving it overrun with cabs.

Adrian Fets, chairman of Durham Independent Taxi Association, immediately vowed to challenge the changes in the magistrates' courts and a judicial review.

Earlier, Terry Collins, Durham County Council's corporate director of neighbourhood services, told councillors the changes had support from most taxi drivers, the Department for Transport and Durham Constabulary.

The changes will not come into force until September 1, allowing time for more talks.

I would have though the councils all white policy was doomed due to the last crown court case

Having read the report it seems that two of the existing zones were all white anyway, and no vehicle will have to be resprayed as the white policy will only apply to newly licensed vehicles.

In my view the council have been reasonable.
