hello everyone I need abit of advice about taxis an I was told this was the place to get it from. I have been after a hackney carriage taxi licence for a while now and now there is one I can get hold of but its quite expensive as the licences here are limited by the council so insead of applying for one from the council you have to wait untill someone sells or rent on a shift basis I now this is a good business as I can buy one and rent it out an make a profit I have been to the bank an I can get a business loan out but my question is that is it worth me buying a licence and what are the good and bad sides about buying one? |

Too many variables to answer that directly. How much are plates selling for? How much are drivers renting for? What type of vehicle does the council license? Is the council going to remove restrictions tomorrow? Will the Equalities Act mean 100s more licenses being issued? Do the bank know the money they are lending will be used to purchase a plate? |

You could chance your arm and apply for a plate from the council under the equality bill, stating that they cannot refuse you if you intend to put a WAV on you never know your luck Write to your MP stating you wish to become a taxi owner driver and can he help |

My only option is to purchase I know someone selling with a wav but just needed to know if its worth purchasing a taxi in a limited area? |

I only buy a taxi if the area is limited as then the earnings are good if its a delimited area there are too many cabs and not enough work My friend is in this taxi bussines he has 3 in halifax 4 in blackburn 4 in preston These areas are all limited and all 100percent wavs And he is getting good rent from each driver so I decided to go into the same bussines. |

Have you had to put up your house as collateral? |

its a bussines loan I think i will have to put my house as a back up or something but I think it will be worth. But its a huge amount of money for a plate but as long as they stay limited I'm more than happy to pay at the end of the day its a bussines. Better than a minicab there's a new one on the road nearly every day an they don't make nothing as there's too many of them on the road. |

You don't have any guarantee whatsoever as to whether a limit will remain, are you going to get a loan and just hope for the best? jack351 wrote: Better than a minicab there's a new one on the road nearly every day an they don't make nothing as there's too many of them on the road.
I can accept that there are a lot of new PH cars coming on - there are in many areas at the moment. We're in a recession, this is what happens. I doubt it's true to say these drivers are not making money though. Do you really believe they are staying in the job just for fun? If these lads weren't making money, they couldn't stay in the job - it's that simple. I agree that they're maybe not making the money they once were (and hopefully will again) but I wouldn't say it's as bad as some make out. |

Does it matter if the earnings are good? Do you actually intend to drive the vehicle yourself? |

No but if they are limited it will be hard for people to buy so instead they'll just rent and if the earnings arnt good then I don't think that much people will rent. I drove one last night and tonight an I was impressed on how much a cab driver can make, but the drunks are very anoying when you get into the town too many people hailing you, fights over who was in the cab first, minicabs being hailed illigaly and taxi stand que jumpers. Had a very long, fun and money making few nights. Don't you just love it soon as you get back into the town after a fare drop off you get people hailing you down instead of you going to the rank |
