Nationwide Taxi Strikers Threaten to Continue Until Friday

Image

On Tuesday, July 19th, cab drivers continued their strike for a second consecutive day all over the country, causing chaos in coastal areas and problems as well for tourists. They threaten to continue with the strikes, if the Ministry insists on its plan for the liberalization of their profession.

Outside the offices of the Taxi Drivers Association of the Attiki office, many cab drivers expressed their disapproval for the deregulation. Due to the protest march, Marni Street was closed. A protest march towards the Parliament took place as well.

Taxi drivers from Thessaloniki marched on foot towards the Macedonia airport and they remained at the arrival terminal. During their march, the traffic to and from the airport almost came to a halt.

The political airport of Araxos, where flights from Eastern and Central Europe land, was also blocked by 200 cab drivers of Patras and Achaia, without causing any serious incidents.

The port of Patras is partially blocked; cab drivers are only permitting the disembarking of passengers and vehicles of ships coming from Italy.

Cab drivers from the region of Ilia organized a protest march at the port of Katakolo without preventing the passage of buses with tourists towards Ancient Olympia.

The blocking of the Heraklion port continues. As a result, one cruise ship could not dock and thousands of tourists did not disembark.

On Rhodes tourists face many problems, as the majority of the taxi drivers are participating in the strike. The taxis have parked outside a building of the South Aegean Region and because of the protest march along the central roads of the island, there were huge traffic jams.
At the tolls of Pyrgetos, 250 cab drivers gathered from the region of Thessalia after noon and lifted the bars permitting drivers to pass without paying.

Cab drivers from the region of Rodopi took over the building of the former prefecture.

The airport of Kalamata was also blocked by cab drivers from the Peloponnese. In addition, they opened up the tolls of Nestani and Kalamaki and the taxis remain parked in the city centers.

Cab drivers are considering the possibility of continuing the strikes until Friday.
