So the answer in Scotland is to have more surveys.

No! It's one nil to common sense!!
The reality is that it's only private hire that want dereg and for all the wrong reasons.
The premium on plates ensures that tuppence ha'penny operators don't flood the market with £500 squibs and bring the whole standard of vehicle down.
Yes there are some operators with good vehicles, well-maintained and clean. If I am going out I don't want to risk a Ford Escort arriving for me, when at least I know what type of taxi will arrive - a decent sized vehicle at least.
Open your eyes, look around and look at the types of vehicle plying both trades and recognise that the PHC trade trying to emulate the taxi trade lowers the the whole standard overall. Private hire should stick to what they are supposed to do, provide the service that they are supposed to provide, stop playing at being taxis and then the world might be a better place for all.

Even I think thats a bit strong --- well just a little bit.

that must be one god thing for my la (or bad dunno) our criteria for hc is the same for phv's same length restrictions same age restrictions (except purpose built)

I think you have missed the point.

The issue isn't PHs doing taxi work, it's allowing those who meet the councils criteria to do the work.

Limiting numbers wont sort out your problem.

no but here the phvs get away with so much here it does not matter what you are so if dereg came in every thing would be legal

Here in P&K we also have the same criteria for Hacks And PHCs.

On another point the whole issue is not just about premiums but about the type of job we do. I'm not interested in going into pubs and clubs, trying to winckle out punters. I will provide a service for anyone who comes looking for me at a rank or hails me in the street. Now in this area there is just enough business in that market for me to earn a living but if delimitation took place every PHC in this area would become HC and we would all have to work an office and I for one do not wish to put money into the pockets of the office owners.

that it is why i went on my own pick who i want up when i want and answer to no one (except la) (and my wife)
