Lots of things but in this instance whether or not, given the evidence to support unpaid mileage, the tax office would believe you or not :D

HMRC have a "big book" with years of calculations in it for costs:takings ratios, example:-

an ice cream seller put all his reciepts in for ingredients including 1 vital item (dont ask me what) but only put half his takings thru

HMRC spotted the vastly different ratio and copped him

BUT, fuel is rising faster than takings, so the ratio is changing plus i do only account work at contracte/tender rates (lower than cash rates) plus due to moving "out of area" ive added 1000 miles per month to my dead mileage, im not gonna pay that myself am i, my ratio per £5K fuel is only £20K sales, if HMRC dont like it i can sign on....im REALLY not bovvered...

And for the last two years I've had the same problem.

And I go down the motorway to work, so I can't get flagged down.

no inflection in a written post so...

do you mean you take the motorway to AVOID flagdowns or that there ARE no flagdowns on a motorway?

chap driving one of my vans got pulled on the M42 for no seatbelt, he said he was a multidrop driver, the copper said "have you many drops down here then?"

points and a fine

(a multidrop driver is exempt if drops are 150yds or less apart)

I take the motorway because, I live outside Brum [not too far from you], work at Brum Airport and it's the fastest way to get there.

Apart from Friday and Saturday nights, when I work Sutton rank.

And it's unlikely that there will be a flag-down on a motorway.

This wasn't at services. He was walking down the motorway to get to work, which was about 5 miles further. I stopped and told him that I would give him a lift to get him off the motorway and that there would be no charge. I asked him if he knew it was illegal to walk down the motorway and he didn't know.

If he does, then HMRC will still expect 6 to 1 earnings from the cost of fuel on that portion of dead mileage.

Please explain?

In this area HMRC expect you to take 6 times your fuel expenses.

So you spend £5,000 a year in fuel, they expect you to take £30,000 for the year; roughly.

Is Fuel Cheaper there or are Takings higher?

Im lucky if I get towards a 5 to 1 fares to Fuel ratio!! I used to get around 6 to 1 around 10 years ago when fuel was relatively cheaper.

6 to 1 was the last time I heard from my accountant.

If fares haven't gone up, as they haven't in Brum for a few years, then the expected ratio might well have dropped.

But the point I was making is that there is a ratio and anyone trying to get away with 3 to 1 or the like is courting big trouble.

No more illegal than you stopping for him, charge or not

Are your travel to work costs from your country pile included?
