I wouldn't be without my meter, it goes on at the appointed time and off when i arrive at the destination.
Any "just stop here for a mo" or "she's not ready yet mate, hang on a bit" all add's up.
Also any hold up's above the norm and it comes off stopped and onto tickover, very rare indeed anyone argues with it.
Punters understand it with the cost of fuel nowdays.
My only gripe is paying for it to be tested (£12) when the council cant set our fares.
I've argued till i'm blue in the face that they cant insist on a seal because we dont have to charge by the mile (we do but dont have to) and thats what they test it on, a measured mile, so i say i charge by 11/16 of a mile and they give up and seal it as it is. Next test i'll refuse to have it done, get suspended, appeal, and let a magistrate sort it once and for all.

Sefton do not charge for meter testing. but then again your Mr Barnes is it, seems to make his own rules up, and to be truthful with the new meters all you really need is for them to be certifier by the person who installs them,

Consultation on the use of meters by taxis

People in Oswestry are to have their say on the introduction of meters in taxis. Oswestry Borough Council has called for public consultation because taxi firms are split over the proposals.

Oswestry is the probably the type of template the OFT were looking for.

At the moment owners in Oswestry set their own fares.

Those that don't want meters have put forward the argument that the customer knows exactly what the fare is likely to be when they get in the cab.

I suppose time and distance calculated by a meter would increase the fare when the vehicle is stuck in traffic.

Perhaps the ideal compromise would be to let those that want meters, have them and those that don't, likewise. The equilibrium could be that the council sets the fare, regardless of the way you operate?

As far as I am aware, every council has some form of knowledge test before a driver can start.
In london it is a very basic map test, the reason its basic?, to make it easier for the imigrants.

There are no knowledge tests AT ALL in london regardless of race or creed of the driver not even a basic map test at any point between application and getting it, so I am uncertain what part of London the operator you work for is in ??

I wonder if as a passenger its best being in a minicab with a meter where the driver is lost, or in a minicab without a meter where the driver is lost?

For god's sake GMB grow up!.
Why call me a ponce?, I am stating a fact based on my experience when I say the majority of PHV drivers do not know where they are going.
What do you want GMB, a meter in PHV's a drivers going the wrong way and customers being overcharged, I suppose you do, just as long as your members are alright.
We serve the public and they deserve a good service at a good price.
Are you honestly saying that PHV's in london are all good and deserve a meter?.
I do not mind you tearing my arguments apart, but please refrain from calling me a ponce, it is very offensive and uncalled for.

GMB, what I am in favour of is a map test with a route finding test built in, but not sat nav, in my experience the drivers who use sat nav will follow the route the sat nav gives them regardless of the fact it may be taking them the wrong way.
Written and spoken english should also be compulsary.
