I am going by what I see in my town. The main rank usually has the same 6 cars on it all day. They probably get no more than 1-2 jobs a day from the rank each. Yet they still sit there day after day after day.

The suggestion made previously was that drivers would only work the busy times.

If that was the case and, say, half the drivers changed to nights, then your scenario above would mean 3 cars doing 3-4 jobs an hour from that rank.

How do you work out that the drivers would get 3-4 jobs per hour when there are only 6-12 jobs PER DAY from the rank. And at the moment, with the exception of one of the drivers, they all work evenings and and until the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning.

If it's that bad, why bother? :?
1 or 2 jobs a day hardly seems worth the effort.

Thank you for your e-mail about the consultation exercise which the Department is currently engaged in about European proposals to amend the Working Time Directive for mobile workers.

You expressed concern about the fact that neither the NPHA nor the NTA had been included in the consultation list.

I should explain that the consultation exercise on the Directive does not affect taxi and PHV drivers.

Paragraph 5 of the executive summary explains who the Directive applies to:

“5. The Directive applies to mobile workers (namely drivers and travelling crew) who are subject to the EU rules on drivers’ hours as set out in Regulation (EC) No 561/2006, or, if they fall outside that Regulation, the European Agreement Concerning the Work of Crews of Vehicles Engaged in International Road Transport (AETR). The Directive is implemented in Great Britain by the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/639) and in Northern Ireland by the Road Transport (Working Time) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005 (SI 2005/241).”

This does not include drivers of taxis and PHVs.

The Department’s contact on working time is Steve Oliver. His telephone number is 020 7944 2756; he would be happy to discuss this if you wish to ring him for further information.

Yes and no. :?

I take on board what the civil servant says, but what about part-time taxi/PH drivers that are full-time bus/coach/truck/delivery etc drivers.

Will their taxi/PH hours be part of their working week?

They always have been, since drivers hours were introduced for bus/truck drivers.
