Hi everyone, I'm about venture into the big wide world of private hire. Have put my licence application into the local council and just awaiting that to come back clear. After that it's making the decision to buy a car or hire from the company I'm going to work for.

Just wanted to say hello and perhaps get a bit of advice from all you experience folk out ther!

I'm from Bolton and the chap I've spoken to seems really nice. I've put together the following costs, would you say this is reasonable? I'm willing to put in the hours and have no problem with working unsociable hours.

This might seem a bit silly but it's an absolute dream of mine to work for myself. Thanks to some good fortune I only really need to earn about £500 a month to live so I've worked out the following, if anyone would be able to adjust these figures so they're more accurate I'd really appreciate it :). This is based on owning my own car. Once the chap has got back to me with costings for hiring (I'm 24 and normally his insurance only covers 25+ so he's going to look into it for me.

This is monthly

Insurance - £180
Radio Hire - £368
Diesel - £275
Maintainance - £150 (MOT Fees, brake pads/tyres/filters etc etc

Total - £973.

In a dream world, I'd bring home £1000 before tax a month, that being the case I've worked out the following.

40 hours a week £11.54 per hour
50 hours a week £9.25 per hour
60 hours a week £7.69 per hour.

Do any of those seem like reasonable take home figures? Having spoken to a lot of the guys I get taxis with, they seem to be pretty busy on Fri/Sat evenings and average 2 - 4 jobs worth £3 - £6 per hour and usually 1 to 2 jobs of a similar rate at quieter times (with the odd job that's a bit further).

So from that, what I'm looking for seems doable, providing I've got my costings near right we should be all ok!

A lot of the guys tell me it's really quiet at the moment, but I think given I'm willing to put in decent hours I should be ok from what I need to live.

I would appreciate any comments or just a hello! It would be nice to stick around as I like the internet :D.

Don't know about you're costings but Hi anyway. I think it is more sensible to hire a vehicle to start with to make sure you like it before you make any commitment to purchasing your own and Good Luck I hope it all goes well for you :D

I'm in the same boat but I'm 22 and looking to get into taxi driving as a full time career and think I would prefer the unsociable hours to be honest.

The main problem for me is figuring out how to break into taxi driving as a career and how to fund either a vehicle I own or a vehicle to rent.

Would like to see what sort of answers you get as they may help me too!

You're not sure meaning I'm totally wrong or you're not sure because... erm, well, you don't drive a taxi or are a HC or something?

The insurance is based on someone else of 21 on this forum advising they got a quote for £2000 so I thought I'd be able to get similar, the radio quote is accurate, diesel and maintainance are best guesses.

As I say, show me the way haha!

Ahh good luck to us both mate! Me too to be honest, I'm a bit of a night owl anyway, my sleeping patter is always 4am - midday when I'm off work. I'm sure I could change that to catch the morning rush hour.

I think I'll rent at first, providing it's no more than say... £5-600 a month to rent with insurance included. If it's more than that it would be difficult to justify renting instead of owning my own car. If it all went wrong and I hated it the car could always be sold.

I'm not sure because to be honest I didn't check it to see if you are right and everyone has different figures depends on circumstances. I am a driver for my sins in a former life and have been for some 8 years on PH. Diesel is reflective on how far you go which depends on how busy it etc. There are far more experienced people on here than me and I'm sure they'll get around to saying hi and commenting but probably not tonight cos they'll be working or drinking no doubt :lol:

Haha sorry, I should've been clearer. The hours rate is to bring home 2k a month leaving just over 1k before tax.

40 hours x £11.54 x 52 / 12 = £2000 per month and so on with the other hours.
