Post subject:  Carriage of petrol
We frequently get calls to rescue people who have run out of petrol.

My attitude is that I'm prepared to do the job if it is in a suitable container (ie designed for purpose and no larger than 5 litres) and carried in the boot.

What are the views of others? Also, is it legal?

In an emergency, such as some poor sod running out of fuel, yes. But otherwise no, IMO.

Tried to trawl the HSE website to find the answer. The short answer is yes you can carry small amounts in suitable containers, and are excempt from ADR regs.

limited quantities of almost any product can be carried, but a tremcard should be provided

paint (not emulsion) is ADR - in sufficient quantities

As long as it ain't a coke bottle full of fuel and it is a proper plastic mini jerry can with no more than a gallon in it I think you'll find it legal to do it.

1st of all do your council permit you to carry a container of petrol in the vehicle
2nd does your insurance cover you to carry flammable liquid
3rd are you displaying a flammable liquid warning sign ?
the answer we were told is your allowed to take them to the petrol station but they have to make there own way back !
you are NOT allowed to carry any flammable liquids or explosives
we were also told if you had w/c passenger with a oxygen tank attached for the user ,you can not take the cylinder of oxygen ! the reason given was if in a accident and the cylinder was damaged it would go up like a bomb + your insurance would be void as your not allowed to carry flammables and explosives

be careful its a minefield out there

I carry a spare approx 4.54 litre of diesel in the rear of my E7. God only knows why because I have never run out.................on second thoughts it started when I had a hire vehicle back some time ago and of course you did not fill it up as it could go back tomorrow so to speak.

So is carrying spare fuel in a recognised container illegal?

Well gubber me ..... the NVQ has got something bang-on right for a change.

I've been saying this about oxygen tanks for years, but no one would believe me.

There is no licence required to sell diesel from a petrol station....
