I have had my insurance renewal and was under the impression that I had "Public Liability" cover, as I had in the past. However on this occasion it was omitted from my quotation, no doubt it was done to make the quote look a lot cheaper

So basically what is the opinion of you ladies and gentlemen with regards to "Public Liability Cover".........Do we need it? .............or not?

I thought it was a legal requirement when carrying the public. I know that it is required for doing my school contracts.

If you have a few million in the bank, then no you don't need it.

However I doubt your council will allow insurance without such cover, or IMO shouldn't.

I found out that whilst most hire and reward policies have some element of public liability, it is rarely sufficient to cover the liability of say, a local Authorities requirements, for a school run for example.

Extra cover, on a separate policy, is usually required – also check that you are covered in the event of something happening away from the vehicle, whilst on the job (should I rephrase that??)

Just a heads up –

I know of a couple of incidents locally that when someone has asked a mate to cover a school run for them for some reason, they have not checked their Public liability cover, the council have found out, and the drivers were dropped in the cack.

In one case, a PH company lost their contract altogether.

Private car insurance will have third party liability cover. Hire & reward will have, in addition, public liability cover, normally about £5m. However, this is usually not sufficient for LAs and the like who typically require a minimum £10m.

John, if your insurance doesn't mention a public liability figure, I would doubt that you comply with your licensing conditions. Check the detail as a matter of urgency.

I have just checked mine. I have £5,000,000 cover and the council require £5,000,000 Sorted.

I rang our LA and they do not require us to have any public liability, the person that I spoke to seemed to think that "Fully Comp" should be adequate.

.....And get yourself covered anyway. A court case following an accident will be very, very expensive.
