Post subject:  What can I find out

I want to do some 'market research' into 'Executive car services' in a few neighbouring Districts.

Actually what I want to find out is how many licences and what type of vehicles certain Chauffeur companies I am competing against have.

I intend to visit the respective Council Offices and ask to inspect their records.

What am I entitled to see and what am I not entitled to see.

You can inspect all details of licensed HCs i.e. owners, age, colour under section 42 of the 1847 Act.

Although no such provision applies to PH, I would have thought that all details of vehicles licensed could now be sort from the Freedom of Information man at each council.

It might be more difficult gaining personal details of the owners and drivers, if not impossible under the DPA. But general details about what Exec vehicles they have licensed shouldn't be a problem.

Perhaps it might help if when you write or e-mail each council's FoI man, a copy could go to the local LO.

I could re write what Sussex has said, but it would be repetetive,I think you are allowed to see the private hire register.
