Unified taxi fare system to be introduced

A unified fare system and more accessible vehicles are to be introduced as part of a new code of regulation for the taxi industry, it was announced today.

Under the new guidelines, drivers will also undergo training, and a customer complaints system will be set up. Charges will operate on a per mile basis, at a rate set by the Taxi Regulator rather than local authorities, and meter boundary areas will be abolished.

Speaking at today’s launch, taxi regulator Ger Deering said people should not be concerned that fares will go up: “There are very different and complex fare structures around the country, but yet in relation to the actual journeys themselves the amount that people pay for trips doesn't vary a lot.

“What we want to do is make the fares simpler and more unified and that doesn't necessarily mean an increase, it means of a standardisation in how they're calculated and charged."
