Just a quick one concerning insurance for private hire taxis.

Being new to the game and just applying for my licence can anyone tell me what sort of figure I could be looking at for private hire insurance.

I've just spoken today to someone who says he's been in the game for the past 25 years, he now only works weekends as he also drives HGV for a living. He tells me that he now pays £1500 for a years insurance and that I could be looking at a high figure as a new driver.

I've had my licence since 1994 and I've a clean licence, had no accidents for the last 9 years and have 6 years no claims bonus. Is it possible to use the 6 years no claims bonus I have for work as a taxi driver and does anyone in a similar situation have any idea of what the average cost of insurance might be for someone such as myself who is starting out. The car I intend to use is worth less than £500 and so I wouldn't be looking for fully comp insurance cover.

when i first started out i had 4 years no claims on my personal car insurance, however when i went to get PH insurance they told me it would not make much difference. they do the years no claims based on the years as a taxi/PH driver.

my first year i paid £2800  i just got a quote for £2100, but i did make a claim last year.

it seems the value of the car does not make much difference to PH insurance, most of what you pay is public liability. i found that out last year when i changed from a r reg mondeo worth about £1500 to a £11K volvo S80 and the insurance price only went up by £80. 8)

the min insurance for ph in dundee is around £1000, the age of the car does,t come into it, its the public liability which put the price up, patons allow you to transfer some of your no claim bonus from you private car
before you put a £500 cab on check how many cab tests you will have to have ,if its three or more this will almost certainly cost you more than the insurance

It all depends on where you are going to work. If you work down south then the premiums seem to be a lot cheaper than the North East and West. It would appear there are some iffy folk in those manors.

Your best bet is to ring the world and his wife, go to the links page and trawl through the trade mags. It will take forever, but you could save hundreds.

As for the no-claims, I think you will start with no no-claims. But one or two will revise their premiums after 6 months.

I think. :?

It's a pity that I can't use my existing no claims bonus, then again I think insurance companies make up their own set of rules these days, maybe I should set myself up as an insurance broker

Anyway guys, thanks a lot for the info, I think the fog is finally starting to lift :D

You won't get much help of the London minicab drivers on this one . . . .

'Insurance you say? Hang on officer i'll just phone my mate from Tottenham, does a good line in these he does. Taxee taxee........'

As has been said read the trade mags and check out insurance offers. A few drivers have tried Swinton, but a lot of them are on fleet insurance.

If you are going to work with a decent firm, then they might have a group insurance which could be cheaper for newbies.
