London taxi tariffs to be investigated The Assembly's Transport Committee gave permission to the Public Carriage Office (PCO) to undertake the enquiry into how the new increase of nighttime and weekend tariffs will affect both customers and drivers of black cabs and licensed minicabs. The PCO's study will also examine its requirements for licensing black cabs and minicabs, as well as measure the efficacy of new emissions regulations to weigh whether they assist mayor Ken Livingstone's goal of creating a Low Emission Zone. "Taxis are a vital and popular part of London's transport network, and it is in everyone's interests that they should be able to get on with their job of providing a cost-effective and efficient service," said Peter Hulme Cross AM, member of the Transport Committee. "There have been a lot of changes to regulations on licensing and charges over recent years, and I am keen to hear firsthand just what impact this has had on passengers and taxi drivers." Hulme Cross, who will lead the investigation, said he will specifically speak to taxi drivers and private hire companies, trade associations and passengers groups and unions. The PCO was incorporated into Transport for London (TfL), the Capital's transport authority, in 2000. |
